ABOUT ME

My name is Laurie Smith and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the South Burlington City Council.  Vermont has been my home for over 47 years and my roots run deep in this community.  My wife, Laura, and I live in the Queen City Park neighborhood near Red Rocks Park and we are fortunate to have children and grandchildren living nearby in South Burlington and Burlington.

I have had a lifelong love for nature and care deeply about the environment. Since a young age, my joy and inspiration have been found in nature, in my ability to repair or build just about anything, and working with wood.

As a self-employed entrepreneur and creative problem solver, I turned these passions into successful businesses by founding a woodworking company in 1977 and later, a design-build construction company from which I retired in 2013. In 2003, my "straw house" (shown to the right) won a "best of the best" award from Efficiency Vermont.

Throughout my career, I've collaborated with city councils, planning and zoning departments, development review boards, and the VT Act 250 Commission for commercial redevelopment, residential subdivision development, and individual residential projects.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to participate in municipal government as a member of the Shelburne Development Review Board, Auditor for the South Burlington Fire District #1 (Queen City Park) and as a current member of the South Burlington Planning Commission.

My commitment to community service and the time I have spent as a Planning Commissioner have inspired me to seek a position on the South Burlington City Council.

If I am fortunate enough to be elected to the City Council, my goal will be to implement the updated City Plan. My vision is to form a framework that comprehensively maintains focus on our pressing core concerns (housing, education, budget, infrastructure, and sustainable growth) while undertaking actions that address the existential challenges of climate change.

I understand the need for fiscal responsibility and how taxes and spending impact our personal finances, community growth, schools, and infrastructure.  I will carefully seek balanced, practical, and creative solutions that equitably meet the needs of all of our residents when addressing both our short term and future goals.

We need to increase access to affordable and quality housing in the city while using environmentally sound principles.  Going forward, development of housing in South Burlington must focus on being sustainable and affordable.

My life experience, skills, and broad perspective will enable me to effectively contribute to our City Council. I  strongly believe in the collaborative process between city leaders, government, and citizens. I will utilize consensus-building, mutual respect, and support to ensure that South Burlington remains an affordable and great place to live, learn, grow, work, and play.

I am committed to open communication and transparency throughout my campaign and, if elected, during my time in office. I look forward to conversations to better understand your concerns, ideas, and visions for the future of our wonderful City.

Thank you for considering me as your candidate for City Council. I am eager to serve and work collaboratively towards a bright future for South Burlington.

Your support is crucial to the success of this campaign, and I invite you to join me on this journey by contributing or reaching out to me to volunteer with my campaign.
